Drilling Down for Solutions
Hikuwai Bridge and Mangahauini Dropout Remediation – TREC

As part of a broader infrastructure resilience programme, TREC commissioned Onsite to undertake detailed geotechnical testing for the Hikuwai Bridge No.1 upgrade and the Mangahauini Dropout Remediation project. Both sites had been impacted by ground instability and slope failure, necessitating a deep understanding of subsurface conditions.
Our field scope included:
- Drilling of 23 boreholes using HQ and PQ casing systems across varied geologies
- Cone Penetration Testing (CPT) to profile soil strength and stratigraphy
- Installation of piezometers and inclinometers for long-term monitoring of groundwater and slope movement
A robust project management framework underpinned delivery. Weekly progress tracking was managed using Microsoft Project, ensuring visibility across timelines, resourcing, and potential constraints. A layered oversight structure — including a Project Manager, Division Manager, and General Manager — provided quality assurance and strategic coordination throughout.
This project is a clear demonstration of Onsite's strength in high-complexity field investigations, where precision instrumentation and long-term data capture are essential to enabling informed engineering solutions.
